Honed concrete is a low-sheen option for projects where natural texture and grip matter more than gloss. The slab is ground to the selected stone exposure, refined to a matte finish and sealed with a system selected for the use and environment.

How honing differs from polishing
Honing and mechanical polishing both use progressive diamond tooling, but they stop at different finish levels. Honing stops at a matte or low-sheen surface. Mechanically polished concrete continues through finer refinement stages to the nominated gloss.
Total Grind's honed concrete process includes inspection, surface grinding, progressive honing, repair and grouting where required, then sealing. The selected texture and sealer are part of the slip-performance specification.
Where honed concrete is used
The accepted service scope includes:
- pool surrounds;
- alfresco and outdoor living areas;
- driveways and walkways;
- outdoor commercial areas and café courtyards;
- indoor architectural floors; and
- shared outdoor areas in multi-residential projects.
A honed or textured system can be specified for greater grip than a high-gloss finish. Do not assume a classification from the finish name alone. Where a project specification calls for testing to AS 4586, the finish, sealer and test requirement should be agreed together.
Aggregate exposure
The amount of visible stone is selected before grinding:
- Light exposure: a shallow cut with limited aggregate.
- Medium exposure: more of the stone pattern is visible.
- Full exposure: the deepest cut and the strongest aggregate character.
Slab flatness and existing defects affect how even that exposure can be. A sample on the project slab helps set expectations before the full area is completed.
What affects the quote
Price depends on the work required, including:
- existing coatings, adhesives and contamination;
- cracks, joints and damaged areas;
- aggregate exposure and refinement;
- area, access and edge work;
- the selected sealer and cure window; and
- any specified slip testing.
Total Grind confirms the scope after inspection rather than applying one square-metre rate to every slab.
Honed, polished or microcement?
Honed concrete provides a matte, stone-exposed finish. Polished concrete continues to a more refined sheen without a topical coating. Microcement is a thin applied finish that can create a more uniform colour over a suitable prepared substrate.
The choice depends on the existing slab, the desired appearance, internal or external exposure, traffic, slip requirements and maintenance plan.
Process and safety
- Inspect the slab, moisture, coatings, damage and access.
- Remove incompatible coatings and prepare repairs.
- Grind and hone to the agreed exposure and finish.
- Apply the specified sealer and allow it to cure.
- Provide cleaning, cure and inspection guidance.
Concrete grinding can generate respirable crystalline silica. Safe Work Australia describes the risk and control duties. Total Grind's recorded equipment and compliance information includes H-class extraction and fit-tested respirators.
Maintenance
Use the cleaner specified for the installed system and avoid products that can damage the sealer. Recoat timing depends on traffic, sun exposure and the installed product. Inspect the surface and recoat when the system shows wear rather than relying on one fixed interval.
